Autumn in the Canyon

The name chelly is a Spanish borrowing of the Navajo word Tséyiʼ, which means "canyon" or "inside the rock." Sandstone walls rise up to 1,000 feet over ruins and dwellings of indigenous tribes, from the Ancestral Puebloans to the Navajo who still inhabit and cultivate the valley floor.
