Alaska Rising
A powerful volcano named Mount Redoubt west of Alaska's Cook Inlet is the tallest peak in the Aleutian Range of volcanic mountains. This historical image was captured just weeks prior to its last eruption in 2009. Puffins and gulls are scattered among rock formations around Redoubt Bay with a puffin in flight before the dominant peak. The nearly 10,200-foot peak is designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.
