Geothermal Nesjavellir
When people first arrived on the island we know as Iceland they thought the place was on fire. Plumes of steam however were what they saw, not plumes of smoke. Water boiling below the grounds surface generated hot water and steam which today is harnessed as a source of heating and geothermal power.
