A remnant of a bristlecone pine is bleached by the sun in the White Mountains just east of the Sierra Nevada Range in North America.  The ten-thousand foot (3400 meter) altitude hosts some of the oldest specimens of wood in the world and some of the living specimens here have endured for thousands of years.
